A recent study titled “Worst Drivers in America 2024” has revealed that Southern California ranks among the worst driving regions in the nation, with two cities in San Bernardino County landing in the top five for poor driving. According to CBS News, the research conducted by ConsumerAffairs shows that Victorville and San Bernardino are second and fourth, respectively, in the list of the worst drivers.
This study utilized data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which included statistics on the number of fatal accidents per 100,000 people, the number of fatal accidents related to bad driving behaviors, the number of alcohol-related deaths, and the incidents of fatal accidents involving speeding. The results indicated that both Victorville and San Bernardino scored above 60 on a 100-point scale.
Memphis, Tennessee, has held the top spot for the second consecutive year, while Macon, Georgia, ranks third and Jackson, Mississippi, rounds out the list at fifth place.
Victorville’s high ranking can be attributed to an alarming number of alcohol-related traffic deaths, which is the second highest in the nation, along with being fifth in fatalities associated with speeding. Although San Bernardino ranks lower, it surpasses Victorville in terms of the number of fatal accidents due to drunk driving (7.7 per 100,000 people) and speeding-related fatalities (11.3 per 100,000 people).
Despite being highlighted as some of the worst in the survey, California as a whole ranks 33rd out of all 50 states, indicating that the overall driving behavior is not too poor. The study defines bad driving behaviors to include aggressive or reckless driving, wrong-way driving, failure to yield, improper passing, and illegal turns.
Other cities in Southern California also made it into the national top 50, with Fontana ranked 31st, Riverside at 40th, Orange at 43rd, and Corona at 47th.
