2024 College Student AI Art Season Opens in Beijing to Explore the Integration of Artificial Intelligence and Culture

On October 11th, the 2024 University Student AI Art Season officially kicked off in Beijing under the theme “Art and Intelligence Co-creation for Aesthetic Innovation.” This event aims to inspire university students and young creators to lead artistic innovation through technological advancements while integrating artistic values to enhance technological development. The initiative seeks to blend technology and art in talent education and to explore new aesthetic forms and future possibilities that arise from the intersection of artificial intelligence and cultural arts.

In his opening remarks, Zhang Ge, Secretary of the Haidian District Committee, highlighted that this year’s AI Art Season marks a new collaborative effort between universities and local communities to foster innovative productivity and deepen the integration of technology with culture. The outstanding works showcased include AI film creation, fashion design, and interactive art, reflecting the “AI + Art” movement among youth. Haidian District aims to establish the AI Art Season as a national platform for showcasing AI art, networking for AI art talent, and facilitating industry-academia collaboration in AI art.

Academician and President of Beijing Normal University Yu Jihong emphasized that this season represents a significant attempt to explore interdisciplinary studies and the in-depth fusion of production, academia, and research in the field of artificial intelligence-generated content. He expressed hopes that this event would serve as a catalyst to enhance art education, fully support the national cultural digital strategy, and innovate educational concepts, content, and methodologies within an AI-driven context. Additionally, the focus will be on developing cross-disciplinary talent training models to nurture innovative, versatile, and high-quality professionals for the future.

Huo Zhijing, Vice Minister of the Beijing Municipal Propaganda Department and Director of the Municipal Film Bureau, expressed her sincere expectations for the AI Art Season to evolve into a high-quality platform for producing creative works, nurturing talent, and establishing brands. She emphasized the need to produce compelling works annually that meet the public’s increasing cultural demands and to identify talented individuals capable of merging art and technology in their creations. The goal is to make the AI Art Season a cultural brand known for its impact, quality, and achievement, solidifying Haidian’s status as a hub for the innovative fusion of technology and art.

The event is jointly organized by the Haidian District Committee of the Communist Party of China, the Haidian District People’s Government, and Beijing Normal University. Over 1,200 AI art pieces created by university students were submitted for this event, representing more than 175 universities across over 70 cities nationwide, with strong participation from international students as well. During the event, the results of the artwork selections were announced, and esteemed guests presented certificates to outstanding young creators, best mentors, and top organizers.

In the coming month, the event will host a series of activities, including the AI Art Carnival scheduled for October 26-27 at the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Railway Heritage Park. This exciting gathering will feature an AI fashion show, creative market, VR interactive experiences, and AI robot installations, inviting the public to explore innovative ways to engage with AI art.
