Nestled in the heart of Manhattan Beach, the Manhattan Beach Library is often hailed as one of the most beautiful libraries in Los Angeles. From the second floor, patrons can gaze out through expansive glass windows for stunning views of the vast Pacific Ocean, making it an inspiring setting for reading and studying.

If you’re planning a visit to Manhattan Beach, the library should definitely be on your itinerary. Located on Highland Avenue, just a stone’s throw from the beach, the library’s modern glass façade, paired with a vibrant circular glass entrance, captures the eye as sunlight dances off its colorful patterns. Inside, natural light floods the space, complemented by warm wooden designs that enhance the inviting atmosphere. The theme is beachy, exemplified by the octopus chandeliers that hang from the ceiling.

Despite its contemporary design, the Manhattan Beach Library has a rich history, having officially joined the Los Angeles County Library system in 1915. After undergoing a major renovation in 2015, the library was rebuilt in collaboration with HED and Johnson Favaro, creating a two-story building that spans approximately 21,500 square feet. The design emphasizes openness, transparency, and aesthetic appeal. Besides offering an extensive collection of books, the library includes dedicated activity spaces for children and teens, along with a conference room capable of accommodating 80 people. Notably, it has achieved a Gold LEED certification for its energy and environmental design.

One of the most popular spots in the library is the second-floor area with west-facing glass windows, where visitors can admire panoramic ocean views just blocks away from the beach. On clear days, the vibrant blue of the sea provides a perfect backdrop for relaxation or contemplation after a good read. For those looking to stretch their legs, it’s just a short walk of two to three blocks to reach the beach—quieter and more serene compared to the hustle and bustle of Santa Monica’s shoreline. You can take a stroll along the sand or find a cozy spot on the porch of a nearby seaside mansion to enjoy the gorgeous Pacific view.

During holidays, the upscale beachside properties are beautifully decorated, especially for events like Halloween. A notable attraction on The Stand at 1300 is a striking pink mansion that has become a hotspot for social media enthusiasts. Recently, a group of Chinese students was seen photographing the house, sharing that they were drawn here after seeing pictures online. They described the mansion’s Victorian style as picturesque, saying it felt like they were in Europe.

The library is open Monday to Wednesday from 10 AM to 8 PM, Thursday to Saturday from 10 AM to 6 PM, and Sunday from 1 PM to 5 PM. You can find it at 1320 Highland Ave, Manhattan Beach, CA 90266.
