Mikel Arteta is gearing up for a challenging match against league leaders Liverpool this Sunday, but he insists that his team must not wallow in self-pity despite a growing injury list. “We can’t feel sorry for ourselves,” Arteta stated during Friday’s press conference. “We’ve got to embrace a ruthless mentality.”
When asked about the status of injured players Bukayo Saka, Riccardo Calafiori, and Jurriën Timber, Arteta admitted, “We’re doing our very best to have them available, but it’s very uncertain.” In particular, Saka, who hasn’t played since England’s defeat to Greece two weeks ago, remains a question mark. Arteta mentioned, “He’s done some training on the grass, but how much we can get him ready by Sunday is uncertain.”
The absence of William Saliba, who is suspended following a red card against Bournemouth, adds to the challenges. Captain Martin Ødegaard has been sidelined since early September due to ankle ligament damage, which could understandably lead to a sense of frustration for Arteta. However, when asked if he feels hard done by the injuries, he countered, “This is the game. We didn’t want to be in this situation, but we’re fortunate to have a strong squad, talented players, and a positive attitude.”
Arteta emphasized the importance of facing adversity head-on: “When it comes to reacting to a difficult situation, we can’t feel sorry for ourselves. We know our strengths and how tough we can be for the opponent. I love that ruthless mentality in the team.”
Reflecting on past seasons, Arteta noted, “We’ve faced very challenging moments before, but I don’t see this as one of them. We’re energized and ready to play Liverpool at home. The squad is magnificent, and the atmosphere will be electric.” He added, “We need to get on with it, show our teeth, and demonstrate how much we want it.”
Arteta also offered praise for Liverpool’s new manager, Arne Slot, noting the positive impact he’s made since taking over from Jürgen Klopp. “They’re in a really good moment and on a great run,” he said. “You can see the imprint he’s left on a team that was already strong. This is a team that has been competing at the highest level in every competition for nine years.”
