On October 24, the Fuzhou Langqi United Association in the United States handed over $36,400 in donations to the family of Zhang Yang, who tragically passed away unexpectedly. The funds will help support his wife and child during this difficult time. The association also announced that they are actively assisting Zhang Yang’s mother with her visa application to come to the U.S. for her son’s final farewell.
Zhang Yang, a 34-year-old native of Jiangzupu, Fuzhou, immigrated to the U.S. eight years ago. He married and had a six-year-old son. Zhang worked in a restaurant, but he struggled with depression due to unresolved debts from his illegal entry and family pressures. He never sought medical help, and, sadly, he took his own life on October 14.
Following the news of his death, Zhang’s relatives reached out to the Langqi United Association for assistance, bringing along his young son. Upon hearing about the tragedy, President Jiang Dianlin and other leaders, including Jiang Fuchun, quickly organized a fundraising campaign. Within just a few days, they raised the $36,400. The funds were officially handed over to Zhang’s cousin on October 24, who will then deliver them to the family. During the donation ceremony, his cousin presented the association with a plaque of gratitude from the family and friends.
Jiang Fuchun expressed heartfelt thanks to the community and various organizations for their generous support during such a challenging time for Zhang’s family, offering warmth and hope. Chen Shanzhuang, President of the Asian American Federation and Senior Advisor to the Langqi United Association, noted that Zhang’s parents and grandparents in China are heartbroken and hope to come to the U.S. to say their final goodbyes to him.
Currently, the Asian American Federation and Langqi United Association have reached out to the Chinese Consulate in New York and relevant congressional offices for assistance. Zhang’s mother is expected to receive her passport by the end of the month and will interview at the U.S. consulate in early November.
Both Jiang Fuchun and Chen Shanzhuang are calling on the community to continue their support for Zhang Yang’s family. Those wishing to contribute can send donation checks to the Langqi United Association at 779 47th Street, Brooklyn, NY 11220, making it payable to American Fuzhou Langqi United Association.
