On October 14, 2024, Wang Yi, a member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China and the Foreign Minister, had a phone conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian. Both sides expressed positive evaluations of the China-Iran relationship, emphasizing their intention to maintain exchanges at all levels and to enhance practical cooperation.
Amir-Abdollahian conveyed Iran’s deep concern over the escalating risks in the current regional situation, expressing that the country does not wish to see further conflicts. He highlighted the significance of China’s influential role in international affairs and expressed Iran’s willingness to strengthen communication and coordination with China in order to de-escalate the situation through diplomatic means. He urged Israel to exercise restraint and avoid reckless actions.
Wang Yi remarked that the negative impacts of the Gaza conflict have been evident and that regional tensions continue to rise. He reiterated China’s long-standing position that dialogue and negotiation should be used to resolve hotspots, opposing the exacerbation of conflicts and any military adventurism. He called on all parties to undertake actions that would contribute to regional peace and stability, stating that China will continue to act as a responsible major power, working to enhance communication and gather international consensus and strength to play a constructive role in easing tensions.
Wang Yi expressed China’s approval of the Iranian government’s efforts in diplomatic mediation and its initiatives to foster understanding and improve relations with neighboring countries. He supported Iran’s historic reconciliation with Saudi Arabia and expressed a desire to collaboratively promote positive outcomes from the second meeting of the China-Iran-Saudi Arabia Joint Committee, reinforcing the momentum of reconciliation between Iran and Saudi Arabia and injecting positive energy into regional peace and stability.
