In a recent statement, the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) addressed circulating rumors regarding the alleged appointment of an acting Chief of Army Staff (COAS) and dismissed calls for a military coup as treasonous. Brig. Gen. Tukur Gusau, the Acting Director of Defence Information, emphasized that Lt. Gen. Taoreed Lagbaja is in good health and will return to his duties following his annual leave.
Gusau clarified that no senior officer had been assigned as an acting COAS, countering public speculation. He noted that Major General Abdulsalam Bagudu Ibrahim, the Chief of Policy and Plans, is currently providing routine briefings to the COAS, in line with Standard Operating Procedures.
The DHQ is calling on individuals disseminating unfounded rumors to stop immediately, reiterating that Lagbaja is fit and will soon resume his regular responsibilities. Gusau also urged media organizations to verify facts with the appropriate authorities before publishing potentially misleading information. He pointed out that the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) had just had a conversation with the COAS moments before the statement was issued.
In light of the discussions surrounding military intervention, Gusau warned that such actions are treasonous under the constitution. He reaffirmed the military’s unwavering commitment to upholding democracy and loyalty to President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Addressing the current security situation, he attributed the relative peace enjoyed in the country to the president’s support and the dedication of military leadership. To maintain this peace, he stated that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) and relevant security agencies have been directed to take appropriate action against anyone advocating for unconstitutional changes.
Concluding his remarks, Gusau expressed appreciation for the support and prayers from the Nigerian public, assuring them that victory in maintaining stability is forthcoming. These clarifications come in response to concerns regarding the COAS’s health, which had sparked anxiety over the administration’s direction during his absence. Earlier, Nigerian Army spokesperson Maj. Gen. Onyema Nwachukwu also reassured the public that the army remains effectively coordinated in Lagbaja’s absence.
