Rain and snow are frequent in the Northeast, with heavy to heavy rains in some areas, and temperatures in many places in the South will hit record lows

According to the China Weather Network, during the next two days, from October 22 to 23, precipitation across China is expected to gradually decrease. Rain and snow will predominantly affect parts of northeastern and southwestern regions, where some areas may experience heavy rain or rain mixed with snow. As for temperatures, a new cold front is approaching, leading to a noticeable drop in temperatures in northeastern China today. By the morning of the day after tomorrow, many areas in the south may see their lowest temperatures since the onset of autumn, prompting the public to dress appropriately.

Frequent rain and snow in Northeast China, with some areas facing heavy rain

Yesterday, the majority of rainfall occurred in the northeastern, northern, and southwestern parts of China. Monitoring data indicated occurrences of rain mixed with snow or snow in areas such as central Gansu, northern and northeastern Inner Mongolia, northwest Heilongjiang, northern Shanxi, and northwestern Hebei. Additionally, northeastern Hubei, southern Henan, central Anhui, and parts of western and central Yunnan experienced heavy rain, with localized heavy downpours reported in Liuzhou, Anhui, and Pu’er, Yunnan.

Today, precipitation in northern China will be mainly confined to the northeastern region, where heavy rain or rain mixed with snow may be encountered. Rain in the south will also decrease in both extent and intensity. Tomorrow, most of the country is expected to have scarce precipitation, with rain and snow mainly occurring in the eastern part of Northeast China, the southern region of Southwest China, and northern Xinjiang, where localized heavy snowfall may occur.

Specifically, the Central Meteorological Administration forecasts that today, small snow or rain mixed with snow is likely in parts of northern Xinjiang, most of Liaoning, central and eastern Jilin, and eastern Heilongjiang. Moderate to heavy rain is expected in northeastern Heilongjiang, eastern Jilin, eastern and southern Liaoning, southwestern Yunnan, and Taiwan Island, with some areas in southeastern Heilongjiang and eastern Jilin possibly facing heavy rain (50-55 mm).

Looking ahead to tomorrow, areas in northern Xinjiang’s Altai mountains and Tianshan mountains, northeastern Inner Mongolia, northwestern and southeastern Heilongjiang, eastern Jilin, and both eastern and northern Tibet, as well as southern Qinghai, may see light to moderate snow or rain mixed with snow, with heavy to even blizzard conditions possible in specific regions. Areas in eastern Heilongjiang, northeastern Jilin, northwestern Yunnan, and much of Taiwan Island will likely see moderate to heavy rain, with northern and eastern parts of Taiwan Island facing heavy or torrential rain (100-150 mm).

On the day after tomorrow, areas along the Tianshan region in Xinjiang, western mountainous regions in southern Xinjiang, northern Tibet, and central-southern Qinghai, as well as northern regions of the Sichuan Plateau, may also see light to moderate snow or rain mixed with snow. Meanwhile, northwestern Yunnan and much of Taiwan Island may experience moderate to heavy rain, with certain areas in central-eastern Taiwan facing heavy or torrential rain (100-200 mm).

Meteorological authorities are reminding the public that frequent rain and snow will persist in Northeast China today and tomorrow, urging travelers to be cautious of road conditions. Heavy snowfall could negatively impact agricultural facilities and infrastructures as well. On the following days, a large portion of the country will remain dry, while regions in Jiangnan and southern China may see afternoon humidity levels drop below 40%. In some parts of the northwest, humidity could even fall below 20%, raising the risk of fire and dry conditions.

A new cold front is set to cause significant temperature drops in southern regions

In terms of temperatures, today’s new cold front is expected to notably lower temperatures in northeastern China. In major cities, such as Changchun and Shenyang, yesterday’s highs were around 14 to 16°C, but are expected to drop below 10°C today. By the day after tomorrow, temperatures in the Northeast will rebound significantly, with Shenyang potentially reaching a high of 19°C on the 24th. The public is advised to be mindful of frequent temperature fluctuations and adjust their clothing accordingly.

As the cold air moves southward, there will also be a noticeable decline in the minimum temperatures across the Yangtze River Delta. By the morning of the 24th, minimum temperatures in Hefei (7°C), Nanjing (9°C), Hangzhou (12°C), Shanghai (14°C), and Nanchang (13°C) may set new autumn lows. Moreover, some areas may experience a day-night temperature difference exceeding 10°C, prompting everyone to dress wisely to avoid catching colds.
