In a recent interview, Senate President Godswill Akpabio shared his views on the crucial need to deepen bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and the Republic of Korea. This conversation took place during a visit from Ambassador Kim Pankyu and several Korean embassy officials to Akpabio’s office at the National Assembly in Abuja.
Akpabio referred to the meeting as a “major milestone” and stressed the importance of enhancing the relationship between the two countries. He stated, “There are numerous areas where we can collaborate, particularly regarding climate change, which is having a significant impact on Nigeria.”
He also emphasized Nigeria’s pivotal role in regional stability amid ongoing global conflicts. “As our population continues to grow, it is essential for us to establish closer partnerships with countries like Korea. This collaboration could provide us with valuable insights in various fields, including security, agriculture, poverty alleviation, and climate change. We would also welcome the idea of establishing a Nigerian-Korean Parliamentary cooperation,” he added.
Ambassador Kim echoed Akpabio’s sentiments, noting that his visit was intended to bolster the already strong ties between the two nations. He pointed out that economic exchange has been a cornerstone of their partnership since the establishment of diplomatic relations.
“I believe the potential for economic cooperation has never been greater,” Kim remarked. “The Korean government is committed to strengthening relationships with African nations, which was clearly demonstrated at the Korean-African summit held last June.”
He also acknowledged the efforts of President Tinubu to enhance the business environment in Nigeria, which aims to attract increased foreign investment. “I believe these improvements will lead to more Korean companies entering the Nigerian market, ultimately boosting bilateral trade,” the Ambassador concluded.
