On October 17, 2023, Indonesia’s high-speed railway connecting Jakarta and Bandung, known as the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway, celebrated its first anniversary of operation. During an interview, it was revealed that local Indonesian drivers have begun operating the trains, and on this significant day, they could be seen at the controls of multiple trains.
A representative from China Railway International Co., Ltd. explained that these local drivers are currently operating under the supervision and guidance of their Chinese counterparts. They have now developed the fundamental skills required for independent operation of high-speed trains, laying a strong foundation for Indonesia’s future self-sufficient high-speed rail operations.
The Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway can reach impressive speeds of up to 350 kilometers per hour. Since its official launch, the Chinese team has successfully trained 419 initial operators for various positions, including high-speed train drivers.
“One of the most exciting challenges I’ve faced,” said Raan Zha, a driver from Cianjur, West Java. Before joining the high-speed railway, he had a decade of experience driving diesel locomotives. “This is the first high-speed railway in Indonesia, and my family is very proud that I am a high-speed train driver,” he added enthusiastically.
The Beijing Railway Bureau Group was responsible for conducting adaptive training for 32 Indonesian drivers. Through theoretical study, the trainees mastered basic knowledge related to high-speed rail; they practiced simulations according to Chinese standards; and during practical training, the Chinese mentors generously shared their operational experience.
“I feel honored to be part of the training for Indonesian high-speed train drivers and to pass on all my knowledge and driving skills to them,” said Wu Wei, one of the Chinese trainers, expressing satisfaction with the progress of his trainees. He emphasized that the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway represents the speed of China, with each train’s smooth operation and successful handover between roles showcasing the standards and image of Chinese high-speed rail.
Raan Zha shared his experience driving the high-speed train: “The speed is incredible, and the view is expansive. It’s completely different from what you see on traditional trains.” He expressed his eagerness to further master high-speed train driving techniques in the future.
China Railway International Co., Ltd. also announced that full local operation and maintenance of the Jakarta-Bandung High-Speed Railway are expected to be achieved in the future.
