Ipswich defender Axel Tuanzebe is facing a lengthy recovery period after a frightening accident that nearly cost him his thumb. The 26-year-old was sidelined during his team’s disappointing 4-1 defeat to West Ham last Saturday due to a serious hand injury that required surgical intervention, as confirmed by manager Kieran McKenna.
The injury occurred in a domestic incident when a glass shattered, and a sharp shard ended up slicing deeply into his hand. Initially, there were concerns that Tuanzebe’s thumb might not be salvageable. Fortunately, thanks to prompt medical attention and successful surgery, that worst-case scenario was avoided. Nevertheless, it seems unlikely that the former Manchester United player will make a swift return to the pitch.
After the West Ham match, McKenna commented on the situation, stating that Tuanzebe would be “out for a while,” suggesting he is certain to be unavailable beyond the upcoming international break. The defender had made a strong start to the season, earning praise from Brighton’s manager, Fabian Hürzeler, following a goalless draw last month. His absence presents a significant blow to Ipswich, who have performed admirably in their first seven matches but are still in search of their first win.
Additionally, this injury is a setback for Tuanzebe’s promising international career. Since June, he has earned three caps for the Democratic Republic of the Congo but will miss this month’s Africa Cup of Nations qualification matches against Tanzania due to his injury.
