On October 11th, in Lishui, China, I had the opportunity to delve into the “Historical Genes and Cultural Heritage” global intangible cultural heritage imaging exhibition. Upon entering, I was greeted by vibrant dragon lanterns dancing through the streets, walls adorned with exquisite blue and white porcelain bowls, and a thousand men holding torches. The immersive experience showcased the intangible cultural heritage from different regions and historical periods through captivating images.
This exhibition was part of the 2024 FIAP World Photographers Conference taking place in Lishui, Zhejiang Province. As one of the featured art exhibitions, the “Historical Genes and Cultural Heritage” showcased over 340 works by 39 photographers from around the globe, highlighting the diversity and uniqueness of the world’s intangible cultural heritage.
Italian curator Maria brought her friend’s photography series, “The Fire Festival,” to this thematic exhibition. Several compelling images depicted the spectacular scenes of the Fire Festival held in the Shetland Islands. In an interview, Maria shared her thoughts: “The 2024 FIAP World Photographers Conference, alongside the global intangible heritage imaging exhibition, serves as an excellent platform for exchange and learning, prompting new reflections and inspirations.”
As the curator of the “Historical Genes and Cultural Heritage” global intangible heritage imaging exhibition, Jiang Wei passionately dedicated himself to every aspect—from selecting the displayed works to spatial design and visual presentation, striving for perfection. He explained, “Behind each piece lies a vibrant history and a rich cultural legacy. Through this exhibition, I hope audiences can transcend geographical and temporal limitations to experience the resonance and friction between different cultures, while also promoting a wider recognition and dissemination of these valuable cultural heritages.”
Photography serves as a record, a reflection of reality, and an exploration of the future. During the 2024 FIAP World Photographers Conference, a dialogue on “Heritage and Development” in world intangible cultural heritage imaging was held, where photographers and experts discussed how to harness imagery to protect and pass on intangible heritage and to integrate traditional culture with modern civilization.
Amidst this enriching conversation, Jing Weidong, Secretary-General of the Chinese Folk Photography Association, defined folk photography as a vital means of preserving intangible heritage, injecting new vitality into its evolution. “Folk photography authentically documents intangible cultural heritage, enhancing public awareness and participation while playing a unique role in discovering and promoting heritage inheritors,” Jing remarked.
