On October 25, Premier Li Qiang chaired the sixth plenary session of the State Council, where it was decided to appoint Ho Iat Seng as the sixth Chief Executive of the Macau Special Administrative Region, with his term set to begin on December 20, 2024.

During the meeting, attendees reviewed a report from the Macau SAR government proposing Ho Iat Seng’s candidacy for Chief Executive. The session also included a briefing from Xia Baolong, Director of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office of the State Council, on the election process for the new Chief Executive.

In accordance with the Basic Law of the Macau Special Administrative Region of the People’s Republic of China, the meeting confirmed the appointment of Ho Iat Seng to this key position.

Premier Li highlighted that over the past 25 years since Macau’s return to the motherland, the “One Country, Two Systems” principle has been implemented comprehensively and accurately in Macau, resulting in significant economic growth and social stability. He noted that the well-being of the people has continuously improved, creating the best development landscape in Macau’s history. The central government is committed to fully and accurately implementing the “One Country, Two Systems” policy, supporting local governance, and encouraging innovative and responsible leadership. He emphasized the importance of Macau leveraging its unique advantages to integrate with and contribute to the broader national development landscape.

Moreover, the Premier affirmed the central government’s support for the Chief Executive and the Macau government in maintaining national security, promoting moderate economic diversification, improving living standards, and fostering social harmony. The goal is to ensure that Macau develops alongside the mainland and thrives in unison.

Members of the State Council attended the meeting, along with leaders from relevant departments and organizations.
