In an exclusive interview, we had the opportunity to speak with Matt Western, the Labour MP for Warwick and Leamington, who is leading a vital aid initiative for Ukraine. Alongside a group of dedicated volunteers, Western is embarking on an extraordinary mission to deliver crucial supplies by driving four ambulances filled with aid to the Polish border.
“It’s quite an undertaking. We’re covering around 600 miles a day,” he explained, as the convoy set off on Sunday, aiming to arrive by Wednesday afternoon. This initiative, organized by the local Polish community, has already facilitated the delivery of over 30 vehicles since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
“It’s been an incredible effort over the past two and a half years to supply that many vehicles,” Western stated, underscoring the dedication behind the project. However, he also acknowledged the challenges faced during the journey, particularly adverse weather conditions. “The rain has been torrential; it’s made driving really tough,” he shared in a conversation with BBC CWR.
Once they reach the border, the ambulances are set to be handed over to the Ukrainian military for further distribution. Western stressed the ongoing need for support for Ukraine, especially with winter on the horizon. “I think most people understand that we must stand by a nation like Ukraine, which is now facing its third winter in this conflict,” he remarked.
He continued, “It’s going to be incredibly difficult because they’re dealing with low energy supplies and have been severely impacted by Russian attacks. This winter will be very cold with significantly reduced power resources.”
Stay tuned for updates on this crucial mission as we continue to follow Matt Western and his team’s efforts to support Ukraine.
