The Santa Clara Police Department recently launched an exciting new initiative known as the BRAVE project, which aims to “build respect, awareness, and values through education,” fostering a sense of responsibility and community consciousness among the younger generation. They unveiled their new mascot, Walsh, a police dog that symbolizes courage and dedication, on the Santa Clara government website.
The name Walsh honors former Santa Clara officer Sean Walsh, who tragically lost his life while serving in Afghanistan. In his memory, Sean’s mother, Cheryl Walsh, established a foundation to support the work of law enforcement dogs, a cause that has also benefited the Santa Clara Police Department. Today, Walsh stands not only as the department’s mascot but also as a representation of bravery and loyalty, embodying the core values of the department.
The launch of the BRAVE project marks a significant step for the police department in cultivating a safer community. This seven-week program is designed specifically for fourth-grade students. Each week, police officers will dedicate an hour to teaching essential topics such as responsibility, communication skills, resisting peer pressure, bullying, and online safety. The curriculum will also cover important substance-related issues, including drugs, alcohol, e-cigarettes, and tobacco.
“The BRAVE project not only updates our previous initiatives but also redefines the educational role of law enforcement in the community,” said the Santa Clara Police Department. “We believe that through this program, students will gain vital knowledge and be positively influenced by values in their real lives.”
