Trump team accuses UK Labor of ‘interfering in election’; Starmer downplays dispute

On October 23, during an interview, UK Prime Minister and Labour Party leader Keir Starmer addressed the recent accusations from Donald Trump’s campaign, which claimed that the UK Labour Party was “blatantly interfering” in the U.S. elections. Starmer sought to downplay the controversy, asserting that his relationship with Trump remains intact.

According to reports from British media, the Trump campaign filed documents with the Federal Election Commission alleging that Labour Party strategists were sent to assist Vice President Kamala Harris’s campaign, claiming she had accepted their help. The Trump team pointed out that several Labour officials, including Starmer’s chief of staff Morgan McSweeney, campaign strategist Deborah Mattinson, and communications director Matthew Doyle, traveled to the U.S. in recent months to provide advice to Harris’s campaign. They called for an immediate investigation into what they labeled as an “outright acceptance of foreign interference” in the presidential election.

In response, Starmer refuted the notion that Labour officials were interfering with the election, clarifying that the individuals who went to the U.S. were acting as volunteers, not in their official capacities. He emphasized that the Labour Party did not fund any travel or accommodation costs for these volunteers.

Moreover, Starmer dismissed any claims that this situation could affect his relationship with Trump. He mentioned that he had dinner with Trump in New York in September, during which they had a positive and constructive discussion.

“The goal was to ensure we build a good relationship, and we succeeded. As Prime Minister of the UK, I will work with whoever the American people elect as president,” Starmer stated.
