William Patterson University Chinese Art Center held- Deep in the Clouds-Gao Yun Comparative Lecture on Chinese and Western Art and Chinese Painting Demonstration

Renowned contemporary Chinese artist Gao Yun will be visiting William Paterson University from October 28 to 31, 2024. This visit is part of the university’s Distinguished Artists Lecture Series at the Chinese Art Center, which is under the Departments of Art and Humanities.

Gao Yun, who graduated from the China National Academy of Arts, holds a prestigious title as a first-class artist in China. He is currently an expert with the Ministry of Culture’s National Theme Art Creation Committee, a distinguished professor at Nanjing University, and serves as a committee member and Deputy Director of the Chinese Painting Committee at the National Academy of Painting. Additionally, he is the President of the Jiangsu Chinese Painting Society and has held various significant positions, including Vice Director of the Jiangsu Cultural Department and Director of the Jiangsu Fine Arts Publishing House.

Known for his refined elegance and versatility, Gao Yun has made his mark across multiple art forms, including comics, traditional Chinese painting, and stamp design. He gained national recognition at a young age, winning numerous prestigious awards in the field of Chinese art, including gold, silver, and bronze medals at national art exhibitions, as well as top honors for stamp design and comic art.

One of his notable works, “Luo Lun Takes an Exam,” received acclaim at the 6th National Exhibition of Fine Arts, earning the title of “a crowning achievement of 20th-century line drawing comics.” Gao Yun expertly manipulates lines with deliberate precision, incorporating traditional Bai Miao techniques into his artwork. His solid brushwork and decisive lines reflect a unique simplicity, setting a milestone in the evolution of Chinese comics. Throughout his career, he has pursued an elevated aesthetic, consistently exploring innovations while deepening the expression of artistic concepts and pushing boundaries within this realm.

On October 30, from 11 AM to 1 PM, Gao Yun will lead a lecture and demonstration on Chinese painting titled “In the Depths of Clouds: A Comparison of Chinese and Western Art,” organized by the William Paterson University Chinese Art Center, the Department of Art, and the Humanities and Social Sciences Division, along with the Jiangsu Chinese Painting Society.
