In an interview with local officials and residents, we explored the recent transformation efforts in Xiangyuan County, Shanxi Province, aimed at revitalizing aging neighborhoods.
The county is undertaking a series of renovation projects that range from demolishing unauthorized constructions and repainting building facades to enhancing green spaces and upgrading essential utility systems such as water, electricity, gas, and heating. These improvements are designed to not only elevate the aesthetics of the communities but also to rejuvenate their infrastructure.
We spoke with Zhang Wei, a resident of a neighborhood that has seen better days. He expressed his relief at the ongoing renovations, stating, “Our community was in a terrible state—leaking roofs, peeling walls, aging facilities. Now, after the renovations, the roof doesn’t leak anymore. The exterior walls have been insulated and look fresh. It feels like moving into a new home, and I couldn’t be happier!”
The construction scene at the Traffic Transport Bureau’s residential complex was equally bustling. Zhao Changsheng, the site supervisor, shared insights into the ongoing work: “We currently have over 20 workers on-site. The insulation and exterior painting are completed, and we are now focusing on roof repairs and septic tank construction. We aim to finish everything by the end of the month.”
However, the renovation efforts go beyond surface-level improvements. The local housing and urban-rural development department has also invested time and resources into “invisible” enhancements—like improving sewage systems, upgrading heating, and laying down electrical cables. These “micro-renovations” aim to significantly enhance the quality of life for residents, addressing their most pressing needs.
To ensure these changes truly reflect the desires of the community, the Xiangyuan County Housing Authority has actively engaged with residents. They organized multiple meetings with community representatives to gather feedback and develop tailored renovation plans for each neighborhood.
Director Hao Chengwei of the Housing Management Office conveyed optimism about the future, stating, “Moving forward, we will leverage urban renewal initiatives focusing on the renovation of old neighborhoods. Our goal is to effectively tackle issues such as aging infrastructure, inadequate functionality, and poor environmental conditions while enhancing the overall management of these communities.”
As these projects unfold, it’s clear that Xiangyuan County is committed to turning its aging neighborhoods into vibrant, thriving spaces that residents can take pride in.
